Updates From The "C" Family

Hey Folks!

I can't believe we are rolling into February and it's been a while since I popped in.  There actually have been lots of happenings around here.  Just maybe nothing too blog worthy.

So here I am, with a few updates from the end of January and hopefully will have more excitement to share in February.  All these lovely updates are courtesy of my iPhone.

So we completed construction on the screened in porch.  I can't even begin to tell you how much I adore the space already.  I can only imagine how well used it will be come Spring time!

I have now focused my energy on getting it furnished.  Here's a start...with a long way to go.

I'll be back to share the final product as soon as it's actually final.  {oh, and as a side note, the big jute pillows have been replaced with something way more fabulous since this pic was taken}

We finally caved and got Jack his own email address.  Since then, I get emails of this nature on a daily basis.  Can't deny it makes me smile.

I dusted my Cricut off to make the kids Falcons shirts for the upcoming games.  Lucy paired hers with a tutu and just looked absolutely stunning.  Let's hope the tees bring luck our way.

And last but not least, that trip to New York City in the Fall came in mighty handy for Jack's Genius Hour project at school here lately.  He opted to conduct his research on skyscrapers and did an amazing job presenting information.

His board was filled with facts, blue print sketches and photos from NYC.  That pricy Lego Skyscraper souvenir even came in handy as a model.

I just love seeing this kid in his element.  So proud of him!

Up next, is...well....a lot.  I've got to get rolling with Jack's birthday party planning {yes, you read that right, need I say it again, I'm a planner}, I'm knee deep in prep and planning for Teacher Appreciation Week at the big's school, and here comes Valentine's Day.

Hoping February is filled with better pictures and a couple exciting posts ;)

Rain Out

This weekend I was supposed to embark on my very first Girl Scout camping trip with Maggie.  All week the weather report was not looking to be in our favor, but as far I as knew we were still on.

I can't lie, I lolly gagged around Saturday morning taking my precious time loading the car to get out of town.  I had visions of being cooped up in a "cabin" with 20 excited little Daisies for two days.  I was not in hurry.

By mid-morning, I figured it was time to suck it up and head on my merry little way.  Of course, Maggie was just about beside herself with anticipation and I couldn't put off the inevitable anymore.

But...that is when the emails, calls and texts started rolling in.  I was saved by mother nature.  Apparently there was some super rough weather up at the campground and the girls who had already arrived were stuck in a duck and cover position under a Tornado warning.

The Girl Scout camping trip was rained out.  Or more like rain, hail and tornadoe-d out.

Between you and me, I was doing a serious happy dance {camping in the rain sounds nothing but miserable} .  But, my dear Maggie was devastated.  So thats when I came up with a Plan B or as I like to call it Plan Brilliant!

I booked Mags and I a hotel room downtown for the night while she drew up a list of "must-dos".  Now that is my kind of camping.

Her list included...ice cream, a movie, popcorn, a visit to Justice {which is a very big treat}, a pillow fight, and a little snuggling.  Check...check...and check!

So here is our version of a Mommy & Me Camp Out...

Hotel check in...

Chocolate chip mint ice cream...

Backpack hangers, lip gloss, Mixels, a hamburger brush, and a necklace....

Sing! the movie {with popcorn}...

and a pillow fight followed by lots of snuggles...

Mmm...I love my little Daisy and am so thankful we were able to make sweet memories rain or shine.

xoxo magpie!

Super Saturday

We are trying our best to get back in the swing of things after our amazing out-west vacation.  It would be a lot easier if we weren't about to embark on a 4 day weekend.  I'm all about school holidays, but geez, we just started back up.  I have found January to be a complete wash up until this point.

That being said, we spent Saturday doing what we do best....hopping from activity to activity.  We started the day with Jack's basketball game {which, BTW,  I absolutely love watching}.  Maggie grabbed this photo on my iPhone. Who really knows which one is Jack or if he's even the picture, but here you go...

Jack's team is full of his school buddies, Daddy is coach, and the girls have a slew of little siblings to play with. Even if we don't win the game, every Saturday is a score.

Jack had a quick wardrobe change and then was off to Karate Graduation.  After months of work, he has earned his brown belt.  Hi-yay...watch out...advanced brown belt next and then we've got a black belt on our hands.

We are super duper proud him.  Grandma joined us to congratulate our little Kung Fu King on this all important day.

Next up was much needed rest time for Jack and a date with the girls.  Grandma, Maggie, Lucy, and I headed downtown to the Fox to see the broadway production of The Little Mermaid.

We joined family friends and all enjoyed the show side by side.  It was a super sweet production and our first times ever seeing it.

Post show, Lucy informed me that Ursula was her favorite character in the show.  What?!?!  Who says that?  You better believe, I dove into that comment with several follow up questions.  Apparently it had something to do with her purple sparkly costume and her "funny" songs.  Shew, I can handle that...I was a little alarmed there for a moment.

As expected Maggie's favorite was Ariel.  And I was totally digging Sebastian.  Not at all who I had expected to be my fave, but he near stole the show.

Now...now...what to do after that Super Saturday?!?!  I've got a whole three more days off of school to keep these littles busy...yikes!

Wish me luck...

Tucson Take 3

I'm back on the saddle for my third and final take on Tucson.  By Wednesday, weather was near glorious.  While Clay was off on a serious loping ride, Lucy was getting a lesson in the Buckaroo club, and Jack was "taking a break", my Maggie and I went on a trail ride.

Really no way better to start the day then on horseback in the beautiful Arizona desert.  And this was after another delish breakfast at the Ranch Dining Room.

One of the wranglers had mentioned that there are around 30 trails and I believe it.  With all the riding we did, I was never on the same one more than once.  This specific trail with Maggie happened to be one of my favorite.  Isn't it just to die for?

I immediately scooped Jack up from his "break" after our trail ride and gathered Lucy from the club.  We roamed around the ranch waiting for Daddy's return from his western adventure.

It was so fun to just be together...without any messes to clean up, homework to do, or places to be.  Ahhh...that's what vacation is all about, isn't it.

While we roamed, Jack managed to get a lasso lesson from a real live cowboy.  He was digging the tips and was roping a bull by the horns in no time.  I can't imagine attempting this while on horseback.

After our per usual Ranch Room lunch, the girls headed back to the club for riding lessons and tennis.  I took this opportunity to plead with Jack to take one last trail ride with only me.

He sweetly obliged. However, I had no idea that my horse for this all anticipated ride with Jack would be a total jerk.

Jack, thankfully, got a sweetie named Domino.  I got Tulsa.  And let me just tell you, Tulsa was a pain in the you know what.  I'm pretty sure he didn't like people, horses, trails, Arizona, or anything for that matter.  He was as stubborn as a mule.

He kicked the horse behind him, stopped for no reason, bit Jack's horse in the behind, and kept turning around and giving me the evil eye.  There was nothing sweet about Tulsa.  The only good part of that pairing was that Jack was super entertained.

I did my best not to let Tulsa destroy my time with Jack and take away from the incredible Arizona scenery.  But, when he up and turned around mid-trail to head back to the barn, I had just about had it with his shenanigans.  I swear, I did everything I was taught up until that point and he was not about to budge.

A poor wrangler had to come rescue me.  Usually that's all it takes.  But, Tulsa was not giving up...the dear wrangler had to get off her horse and lead me and T back to the group.

I was never so ready to un-saddle {is that a word?}

Some down time was desperately needed.  The Desert Watercolor class was calling our names.  All three kiddos were super excited to join and it was a nice break from horse back.

We all met up in the Mexican Room to receive instruction from the kindest artist.  He has been involved in various art forms for his lifetime and was even a commercial artist back in his day.  Now he teaches class twice a week at the ranch.

Each of the littles chose two prints and were instructed on blending and color choices.  Their work turned out so amazing that I have every intention of framing them and adding them to our kid's art collection in the playroom.

Wednesday came to a tiring close after the Cowboy Cookout at Cottonwood Grove.  Picture the wild west back in the day, with ranchers grilling over the fire, a guitar playing cowboy, and a game of horseshoes.  It was as authentic as a resort cook out can get.  I was loving it.

We ended our evening with our nightly walk back to our hacienda.  Even at this point in the vacation, the stars still amazed me.  I was so spent after my ride on Tulsa, that I was more than ready to turn in.

Good night desert....and you jerk of a horse.

Thursday was our last day on the ranch.  I really was not ready to leave.  If I could have just bottled up the fresh air and sunshine it might have made the departure a bit easier.

We had chosen a late afternoon flight back which lended itself to another morning of riding and one last lunch on the ranch.

Thursday's breakfast was a Trail Ride Pancake soiree up on the mountain top.  A very adventurous way to end our vacation if I do say so.

We all gobbled down a piece of fruit before heading out, knowing breakfast was an entire trail ride away.  Daddy, Maggie, and I opted to go horseback.  I happily had a well behaved horse named A1, Maggie got her favorite, Kermit.  And just wait for it.....Daddy got Tulsa.

Just when I thought I had seen the last of that guy.  But better Clay than me.  It turned out Tulsa was just as big of a pain for the newly expert rider of the family.  So much so, that Tulsa put my ride to shame by raring up on his hind legs and nearly throwing Clay off.  Apparently Tulsa was having a disagreement with a fellow horse.

Clay handled it beautifully and all was okay.  All I can say is, if that had been me, I'm pretty sure I would have been eating desert sand.

Lucy was too little to make the trail ride up so Jack offered to stay behind with her.  The Buckaroos traveled to the breakfast via golf cart.  I imagine that was very appealing to the non-horse back loving brother.

When our horses finally made it to the top, I could smell the pancakes.  I found Jack and Lucy already devouring their breakfast just as happy as could be.

I wasted no time getting in line for Cowboy Bob's Famous Fixins'.  These pancakes were amazingly delicious.  My mouth is actually watering just writing about them.

Again, I found myself in complete awe of my surroundings.  Nothing says Arizona like this picture.  {Too bad this was the only day I opted out of fixing my hair and putting on makeup....but, I still had my boots on!}

We all had a lovely last morning up on the mountain.  The girls had made so many friends during our stay that it was a little bittersweet saying goodbye.

However, there was one highlight.  I'm sure my kiddos were more than happy to know this was the last picture I would be taking of them just because "it's so beautiful out here".

The kids played around on the ranch while I packed up our belongings.  I had to stuff a lot of Arizona dirt covered boots into suitcases.  We enjoyed our last Ranch Dining Room lunch and then made one final stop at the gift shop.

The long day turned even longer with a shuttle ride to the Tucson airport and a lengthy flight home.  We all dozed off here and there dreaming about starry skies and horseback.  We arrived home just in time for a freezing cold ice storm...I found that to be just about as welcoming as Tulsa's ride was.

So, I imagine it's pretty clear, that I adored this vacation.  There are certainly things that did not go perfect, but all in all, we had an incredible time.  An experience of a lifetime.

Would I do it again?  You bet your BOOTS I would!

Tucson Take 2

I had absolutely no intention of this vacation taking up three posts.  But, when I started perusing pictures, I realized Tuesday was a pretty packed day.  With that being said, here's a look at Tuesday, mid -vacation, and I'll be back with the rest.  So...hold on to yer' hats.

We woke up to another beautiful Arizona morning on Tuesday.  Definitely some aches and pains by this point, I blame the horses and the bed.  Even with that, you can't help but be in awe of the scenery.  I think my kids were trying to come to terms with Mommy taking a picture of them in front of every gorgeous bit of nature.  They will thank me one day....I'm sure of it.

Another terrific note to this Tuesday, my girls sported their first pair of jeggings.  Jeans!  A huge treat for them and a pretty big step for me {although do jeggings even really count?}.

Per our normal routine we walked from our hacienda to the Ranch Dining room for breakfast.  You can pretty much guarantee Lucy was having scrambled eggs every morning, Jack having French toast {which I have to admit was to die for}, and Maggie having cereal.  Pair that with a huge fruit bar and an over the top assortment of juices and we were set to start our day.

From there, Lucy was just itching to get to the Buckaroo Club.  She and Maggie both had made new besties and couldn't wait to see them.  Lucy's morning consisted of a riding lesson and playground fun.  This little one can find joy in any activity.

Meanwhile Clay and I enjoyed a trail ride with the big kids and their Buckaroo crew.

I'm thinking this is the day that Jack decided he could take or leave horse back riding.  Something about it being too bumpy {among a laundry list of other reasons}.  The girls were still in love and couldn't get enough.

By this time the aches and pains had the Spa calling my name.  So before I headed over for a much needed massage, I caught a glimpse of Lucy preparing to groom and paint the ponies.  Besides riding, this was Lu's favorite activity of the vacation.

They literally had washable paint and decorated the ponies.  I heard all kinds of details about Patches getting the royal treatment with a pink and purple mane compliments of Lucy herself.  I mean what can be more fun than that?

After my Arizona spa treatment, I grabbed my littles from the club for a bit.  Daddy was out taking an advanced riding lesson, because that's just the kind of things he does.  And it turns out he is a pretty good cowboy.

While we waited, the kiddos tried their hand at lassoing the mechanical bull.  We got a real lesson later in the vacation, but had fun giving it a try ourselves.

We then watched and cheered Lucy on while she took a ride in the arena.  She mounted her favorite horse, Golden Eyes, and was off.  The cuteness of that little gal on that big ol' horse is indescribable.  We loved watching her and were enjoying the break and steadiness of sitting on bleachers instead of horses.

Jack had been in great anticipation to go fishing.  So, we were all happy to have our family wrangler back so we could take a trip to the pond.

The kid's baited up with hot dogs {apparently a fish fave around the ranch} and tried their best to fish patiently.  Some were better at it than others.

Apparently the casting was a big hit with the girls.  I was dodging flying hooks left and right.

And look who finally caught the first and only fish of our pond visit!  It was super exciting.  The other two kiddos got a lesson in being happy for others.  It's not always easy.

We topped our evening with dinner at the Ranch Dining Room, Lucy passing out in my arms once again, and our lovely starry skyed walk back to the hacienda.  Bedtime never felt so good.

Who knew being a cowgirl was so exhausting?  Take 3...coming up....
