Halloween Week

We had a treat of a week celebrating Halloween this year. I know I've said it before and I'll probably say it again, but Jack sure does change the holidays and all for the better. I consider this year to be "the best Halloween ever", (as far as I can remember, that is). Here is a week in review with our little rowdy cowboy...

On Monday, we were pleasantly surprised with a spooky package from Grandma. Inside was Jack's most beloved treat--books! We got Biscuit's First Halloween, Jack's Halloween and Five Little Monkeys complete with a Monkey Mitt. Jack also found a plush Frankenstein in there. Naturally Jack's favorite was the one with his name in the title until he opened to the last page. Frankenstein starred Jack right back in the face with big googly eyes and gave a spooky growl. Yikes! Once Daddy and I were able to show him it was just pretend and actually really funny, Jack was soon joining in the giggling. Afterwards, he opened the book to that page about 15 times and would peel into laughter. That was followed by turning to every page and repeating "eyes" as he pointed to each of the characters giant googly eyes. "Yes Jack, those are eyes" was the phrase of the day.
The excitement didn't stop there. On Wednesday, we were invited to a Halloween play date hosted by Heather, mother of Meg and Kate. Don't ask me how she did it. With a two year old and a 4 month old, I would have been lucky to get Jack in his costume, much less host a party. But, she pulled it off and it was fabulous. We arrived with our hands full of a diaper bag, cowboy hat (that Jack refused to put on his head), and a gruesome snack of cheese fingers complete with finger nails. In between bouts of play, Jack spent most of his time eating. His full course lunch included 2 slices of pizza, 2 spider cookies, and 2 string cheese fingers . I got 2 very dirty diapers out of the deal in less than 2 hours. Lucky Mama! Heather, the hostess, had an adorable art project for us too. It involved Jack getting his foot painted black and then pressing it on a tile. Add two googly eyes and a ribbon and it was a ghostly trivet. Heather even took time from her own toddler to decorate it with his name and the year for me...thanks wonder Mom! The busy Moms tried to catch up and get pictures of the little ones. Neither task was very successful. After trying to get a group shot of the dressed up kiddos, Heather said it best..."it gets to a point that it's not even worth it". You'll see what I mean from the group shot below. The most important thing was accomplished though, fun was had by all. I took a a very tired cowboy home with me for an afternoon nap. Droopy eyes weren't my only clue he was exhausted. Oh no, Jack ranted "off, off, off, off" the entire ride home as he pulled off his boots, then his socks, and finally his scarf. When we arrived home, I was surprised that I didn't have a naked cowboy in the back seat. Ahhh...the joys of toddlerhood.

And the day of all days finally arrived--Friday October 31st--Halloween! Jack started his morning with school where he had a party and carved a pumpkin. Unfortunately, no Mommies allowed at this age in an effort to avoid sobbing and wanting to go home. So, I had to hear all of the gory details from Jack and his teacher. When I picked J up, he immediately showed me his class pumpkin. Miss Angela told me how he giggled during the entire carve, but refused to have any pulp on his hand. And boy do I believe it, my cowboy hates dirty hands. I'm assuming this is a phase? After nap time, we suited back up in his Halloween costume for the 3rd time and prepared to hit the streets. Since before we even moved in, all I have heard about is how our new neighborhood is Halloween crazy. I was starting to get the picture when on October 1st 80% of the houses on our street were already decorated. But, nothing could have prepared me for the chaos to come. We arrived a couple houses down the street for the Pre-Halloween party around 5:00ish. Jack sat at the kiddie table and enjoyed a light dinner of chicken nuggets, grapes, and cheese. He was actually too mesmerized by the costumed kids to clear his plate. Most of the kids completed their meals and were running through the yard and our Lone Cowboy watched in awe from a distance. By the look on his face, I really thought "he's not going to get it yet", you know the whole Trick or Treating thing? I was imagining hitting about 3 houses and then calling it a night. Well, promptly at 6:00 the house to house hunt began. We loaded hatless Jack in the wagon, grabbed Cosby from the house, and we were off. Our first stop was to one of the corner hot dog and beer stands that adorn the neighborhood. And guess who decided they were hungry now? Yes, our wide eyed cowboy. Hot dog in hand, we were really off this time. It only took two trick or treat stops and I couldn't believe it, but Jack "got it"! And he loved it! All he had to do was walk up to the house, stand on the door step, flash his shiny badge, and someone would put a big bowl of candy right in front of his face, too easy! As sweet as could be, he would so carefully choose 1 piece of candy each time, look at me, and then put it in his bag. As if to say "am I doing this right?". Oh, how I wish I had brought the video camera. So our 3 house expectation turned into the entire street. Each time we left a house, Jack would jabber on and on and on in excitement until we reached the next door. He then would fall silent and follow his pattern of choosing, looking at me, and then putting his candy of choice in the bag. Watching him each time was priceless. However, my best memory of the night was seeing J at his favorite house. It had a green cackling witch on the front door and he was in pure amazement! Since then, when we pass the house he says "witsh, witsh" and I picture his sweet face standing at that front door. Oh, it could make a Mommy's heart melt. But, of course, everything wasn't perfect, close, but not completely. Somewhere in the night we lost Daddy, which means we lost the wagon somehow, and Daddy lost Cosby. Luckily, Jack and I eventually found all three back at the house about an hour later. At that point, Daddy and I tag teamed--he took J out for a few more houses and I passed out candy. Carrying a 28lb cowboy up and down the street is not easy on the feet. As much as I enjoyed it, I had to take a break. Remind me to wear tennis shoes next year or better yet, how about Daddy doesn't get "lost" with the wagon again. My little Halloweiner, Cosby complete with a Halloween collar, helped me greet the last trick or treaters until Jack and Daddy returned. A few scary barks didn't deter those kids! We actually went through 10 large bags of candy. We were all exhausted shortly after night fall. Jack got a super quick scrub down and hit the crib. Clay and I followed close behind with all the lights out at the Cibula house by 9:30. I think that is a first for us. The last thing that I said before going to bed was, "that was the BEST Halloween ever" with images of little J in my head. And thanks to my friend Amy, who pointed out that there are never pics of Jack and I together, I made sure to get one of the two of us on Halloween night. I'm sure it will make me smile for many years to come. Happy Halloween to all and I hope yours was the best ever too!

Howdy Halloween

Here is a sneek peak of Jack's Halloween costume this year. More to come on our week's festivities post Halloween! Until then Howdy Halloween to all! *Note his hand reaching up to take the hat off--Jack is anti-hat this year. This could pose a slight problem for our costume:)*

Zoo Baby

We have been waiting for two things to happen so that we could take Jack to the zoo. 1) dropping the morning nap 2) the weather to cool off. Well, both of the criteria were met in the past month. However, one or both of us have been out of town every weekend since that. Finally today, Clay, Jack and I were here and ready. And boy, had the weather cooled off! We started our trip to the zoo with the temperature in the 50s. A little chilly for me, but about halfway through our zoo tour the weather really warmed up and it turned out to be a perfect day. I'm assuming that most of the animals weren't enjoying the chilly temps either, because we had trouble finding any signs of life initially. Clay and I were beginning to wonder if this zoo trip just might be a bust. However, like I said the weather warmed up and the animals came out to play. We spent the majority of our visit pointing, repeating animal names 2o times, and trying to hold Jack up to see the creatures. Once J was finally able to spot what Mommy and Daddy were referring to, ahhh...then he was a happy zoo baby. The first animal that really caught his attention was the enormous Gorilla and his family. Jack repeatedly shouted, "lilla" over and over again. Oh and believe me, it didn't stop once we left the gorilla exhibit. Nope, it continued to the monkeys, the orangutans, and the chimpanzees. Everything was a "lilla". He even chose his "Goodnight Gorilla" book to read tonight at bedtime. Our whole visit was worth that one gorilla sighting. We continued on with the elephants, tigers, lions, pandas, and then the petting zoo. And once we entered the petting zoo gate, our little zoo baby was in heaven again. He had to pet every goat, touch every "wee wee" (pig), and "baa baa" at every sheep. His favorite activity in the petting zoo?...well, that was brushing the animals. So sweet and gentle with every stroke--he absolutely loved it! Following the animal grooming (which seemed to last forever), Jack went on his first Merry Go Round ride with Daddy. He chose the elephant, because obviously there was no "lilla". Once the ride stopped, Jack headed to the bear for another go round. Why should he have to get off? I let Daddy do that explaining. We ended our visit with lunch and a little park play at the zoo playground. And I now share with you the few pictures of our visit. By the way, has anyone ever tried taking pictures at the zoo? How do you get the baby looking, the animal in the background, and the parent doing the holding all in the same shot? Impossible if you ask me. So although, you may not see the animals or Jack's eyes in these photos, trust me...we were at the zoo and that was Jack.

I would assume this is Jack pointing at a "lilla". Which was actually an orangutan.

The "lilla" that started it all!

We arrived to the elephants right at feeding time. This was my favorite.

I'm pretty sure Jack was screaming "baa baa" at this sheep the whole time he was brushing it.

Round and round he goes!

What a way to end the day...a little playgound fun!

Tag, I'm It!

Okay, so I've been blog tagged...which means I'm suppose to share 5 random things about myself. This was hard to do considering I feel like my life is an open book, but here it goes...

1. I LOVE lists. I have To Do lists for my lists. Something about writing it down, organizing it, and then marking it off when I'm completed gives me such pleasure.

2. I really don't like to wash my hair. I don't mind the shower, but washing my hair...ugh! I only do it about twice a week, three on a good week. Not to mention, my hair performs much better when it is a little dirty.

3. When I was younger, I wanted to be politician's wife. I was fascinated with politics and continued to be until Jack was born. Somehow my interest took a back seat to the daily duties of Mommyhood. And as a sidebar...I am more than happy (& proud) to be Clay's wife.

4. I am obsessed with Dancing with the Stars. I have been since the second season. I have to admit when I first heard about the show on the radio, I thought "that is absolutely ridiculous"! Then one night (pre-Jack), Clay was out of town on business and I needed something to fill my night. I rarely watch TV, so I turned it on not having a clue what to watch. And there it was and as they say, 'the rest is history'--I was hooked. The costumes, the hair and makeup, the moves, the music...it actually makes me want to get up and dance. Unfortunately, I have no one to share my love with. I think I'm the only one my age obsessed with that show.

5. I hate excess bread. I always rip the crust off of sandwiches, pull the bun without burger off, peel away the folded part of a wrap, and tear the bun off before the hot dog begins. I strongly feel that bread deserves company.

Now I Tag...Erin, Stephanie (ha!), and Cristina

Fall Festival

We had a Busy weekend with a capital "B". With Clay out of town, our favorite GG (my Grandma) came to visit. As soon as GG pulled in the driveway on Friday from her 6 hour trip from Kentucky, Jack and I threw her back into the car to head out for dinner. And that was just the beginning. Jack and I kept her busy on Saturday morning with a trip to Jack's school Fall Festival at Mt. Bethel. Have I mentioned Jack changed preschools? Well he did. We finally got in to Mt. Bethel about 3 weeks ago after being on the waiting list for 7 WHOLE months. I had pretty much given up until we got the news. You would have thought that Clay and I won the lottery when we got the phone call letting us know of the opening. I was very satisfied with his first school, but Mt. Bethel is really where we wanted Jack to be. And so far, we have LOVED it! Saturday confirmed our love with a fun filled festival. The weather was gorgeous and the activities were plentiful. GG got to meet Jack's teachers and even some of his classmates. Jack, on the other hand, wasn't too sure what to think about seeing those folks out of the classroom. Hmmm...something doesn't seem right. However, he made himself right at home in the parking lot of festivities. Some of his favorite highlights were the pony ride as GG walked closely by. Or maybe I should say trotted by. Those ponies were moving! The football toss was another favorite, which lacked tossing on Jack's part, more like walking right up to the hole and putting the "ootbahs" in. And last, the duck pond. Jack didn't quite get the objective of catching ONE duck with the net. Instead he chose to dive right in and take a handful of ducks. We followed the fun with lunch at Goldbergs where Jack chowed down on a monstrous grilled cheese sandwhich. All that play can sure make a boy hungry. Saturday post-nap, was full of shopping and another out to dinner experience. On Sunday, we woke up and got busy again. GG, Jack, and I shopped some more and ate lunch out. Post nap was followed by some outdoor play, a quick trip to Target, and dinner out again. Okay, I must mention here that one of the highlights of my Grandma visiting is always her cooking. Not so this time. We were so busy and always out and about that it never seemed to fit in to our day. So believe it or not...we ate EVERY meal out except for breakfast! Next time, we'll have to put GG to work in the kitchen. Mmmm...Jack and I love her cooking. In between all of the busyness, Jack was able to call GG by name and even her little dog, Nina too. It sounded something like this--"GG doggie Nahnah". Our little dog lover had to know at all times where GG's dog was. And once he found her, he would repeat this phrase over and over again. This talking stuff sure is fun! We were sad to say goodbye to my wonderful Grandma and her four legged side kick. But, GG hit the road on Monday morning while Jack and I headed to the doctor for his 18 month check up. We'll see her again at Thanksgiving. And until then, we use these memories to hold us over. As for Jack's doctor's appointment--I'll leave you with his current stats...

Eighteen Month Birthday

Our little guy turned 18 months old today! That's a year and half old--unbelievable! Our baby is turning into a little boy before our eyes. He is growing everywhere, gaining a strong will, and keeping his Mommy and Daddy very busy. In celebration of this wonderful milestone and the budding personality that joins it, I share with you...

18 Things Jack LOVES

1. Food--yes, he still loves to eat. You name it, he'll try it. His current favorites are maple glazed turkey breast and drinkable yogurt. Just pop in a straw and it's gone in about 20 seconds. Yum!

2. The Cookie Monster--that big furry blue guy who loves to eat has stolen our J's heart.
3. Cookies-- maybe #2 has something to do with this one. Jack will hang, and I literally mean hang, on the pantry door and whine "coooookie". If we gave into his will every time he did this, he could very possibly weigh twice as much as he does now.

4. Rocks--he loves rocks so much that we had made a rock garden in our yard just for him. It was quite easy. We bought some small landscaping rocks at Home Depot, poured them in a nice array on the side of the yard, threw in a pail and some plastic spoons, and WAH LAH, Jack is happy. He could play out in his rock pile for hours.

5. Speed Tables--our new neighborhood streets are complete with brick and cement speed tables. Jack loves to take his push toy bus to the one in front of our house and go over and over and over and over and over it again. Back and forth with Mommy on his heels is how we spend a lot of our afternoons.

6. ABC's--he doesn't know which one is which yet, but he is trying. He points to the letters in his name that hang above his crib and spouts something random off like..A, D, K, O. I then repeat the proper letter names and he tries again, occasionally getting one or two right. This happens most places where we see large letters. He also loves to repeat the alphabet after Daddy. I've got to pull the video camera out for that one. Before I know it, he'll be doing it all by himself--So bittersweet!

7. Stepping Stones--we have about 10 stepping stones in our new front yard. Jack has developed a unique fondness for them. Just like the speed table, he goes back and forth and back and forth. He loves when Mommy sings the "Stepping Stones" song from music class with it. He even does the motions as he travels back and forth. Who knew landscaping could be so much fun?

8. Talking--or should I say jabbering with some real words thrown in? He loves to tell Mommy and Daddy all about EVERYTHING! And we love to listen. His vocabulary has multiplied just in the last two weeks. It is truly amazing how these little ones begin to verbalize. Here is a sampling of his new word list...sheese (cheese), cooookie, Cobe (Cosby), side (outside), dow (down), ahhff (off), teeeveee(tv/computer), luvee (lovey), nana (banana), evee (heavy), go, cah (car), ack (Jack), unree (hungry), mil mil (milk), fish, memo (Elmo), eyeee (eye), iss (kiss), nnn (nose), eeah (ear), doggy, bir (bird), tree, bah (ball), shu (shoe), bee, wee wee (pig), cowh (cow), uh (up), elyo (yellow), sligh (slide), sing (swing), us (bus), shu (shoe), pease (please), ank ooh (thank you), and of course the original staples like hi, bye bye, mama, dada.

9. Books & Puzzles--his current favorite book, "Go dog Go". I think it's because he can say the title all by himself. And his current favorite puzzle is the Melissa and Doug chunky farm animal one. There are times when I swear he does this puzzle 20 times in a row. We even had to take it to dinner with us the other night.

10. Lovey--still his favorite buddy around here. Depending on the day and his mood, we may see Lovey only at naps or all day long. Usually a cranky mood=a lot of Lovey time. Thank goodness for that piece of material that serves as a source of comfort.

11. Sleeping--since the day he was born (or close to it) Jack has been a good sleeper. With his wild awake time, God must have been trying to compensate...and I'm forever grateful! We are officially down to one nap. It was confirmed right at 17 months. It actually has worked out extremely well. I'm no longer in nap jail meaning we can do anything we want until about 1:30. However once the clock ticks to that time, it's snoozeville around here. His naps last anywhere from 2-3 hours. A 3 hour nap is on a REALLY good day. Bedtime is a breeze. J practically dives into his crib before kissing us goodnight and we don't hear another peep until the am. And since the loss of the am nap, J likes to sleep in a bit. No complaints here!

12. The Park--my once cautious boy is now a true park explorer. He is up and down and all around the slides, tunnels, ladders, ramps, swings, tubes, etc., etc. When he sees the park from the back window of the car, his eyes immediately light up. And once released from his car seat, he is off. He makes occasional pit stops to check in with me and then he is off again. No more watching the other kiddos and then giving it a try, he is now the park pioneer.

13. Chores--okay, I'm going to enjoy this one while it lasts. Jack has two chores that he loves. 1) feeding Cosby 2) the laundry When it comes time to feed Cosby, I give Jack the measuring cup filled with dog food. He carefully leans down and pours the cup over Cosby's bowl. Of course, only about 8 of the morsels make it into the bowl and the rest scatter around the kitchen floor. This is where Jack gives a very animated "uh oh". Not wanting to leave a mess, J squats down and picks up each pebble of food one by one and places them back in the bowl. On a good day, Cosby helps him out. As for laundry, Jack loves to put the wet clothes in the dryer one article at a time, followed by the dryer sheet, then he closes the door, and last he completes his chore with a push of the start button. He is so proud that gives himself a large round of applause every time.
14. The Computer--so, I'm not really proud of this one. You see his love has turned into a obsession. If he spots a laptop anywhere in the house, you better be ready to play on the computer with him. His favorite website is http://www.sesamestreet.org/ His favorite game is Big Bird's ABC's. I swear this child could live on the computer, which I put right up there with TV. Everything in moderation...

15. Balls--or as J would say "bah". Big balls, small balls, red balls, blue balls, tennis balls, footballs, bouncy balls, flat balls, or anything that resembles a ball-he loves them.

16. TV--again, not really proud of this one. But, what can I say, the kiddo loves Sesame Street. And my disclaimer here is...that is the only TV time he gets. Again, everything in moderation or at least I try.

17. Gym Class--J started a Little Explorers class at the beginning of the month. He is learning to do somersaults, jump, balance, and other various gym activities. And can I say, he loves it. This may be his favorite Mommy and Me class yet.

18. Mommy, Daddy, & Cosby--our little Jack is quite the family man. If someone is missing from our family of four, Jack is out to find them. He loves when we are all together. He will make his rounds repeating every ones name and nodding their direction. Happiness is togetherness for our little guy! And boy, do we love him too! Happy 18 big guy!

Our Little Pumpkin

We made our annual trip to the Pumpkin Patch this weekend--MUCH different with a mobile toddler. I'm pretty sure I spent the entire visit chasing Jack around with a camera glued to my face. Which as you can imagine there were a few stumbles over the large orange things under my feet. What more can I say when the pictures say it for me? Presenting...Our Little Pumpkin ( sorry, I couldn't resist the seasonal cliche)

I asked Jack to sit on a pumpkin and low and behold he did it! (for about 15 seconds)

He then realized it was fun to try to balance his bottom on the large orange "bah" (ball).

What a ham!

This is Jack's attempt to pick up a pumpkin, a very large one at that. It started with a grunt and ended with a defeated "evee" (heavy).

If I can't pick it up why not kick it around? I promise no pumpkins were hurt.

A very windy hayride...checkout what little hair Jack does have blowing in the wind. I love it!

The hayride was followed by a trip to the Jack sized pumpkins. Once we spotted the little pumpkins on the hayride, Jack had to have one. He was elated that he could actually pick one up. Here he is "organizing" the little pumpkin patch. He took at least 20 down and made a nice pattern on the ground. And when Mommy tried to put them back for the other customers...oh, we won't even go there. I'm sure you can imagine.

Bye Bye Pumpkin Patch! See you next year!

Monkey Jack

Today Jack and I met Sophia and her Mommy, Cristina at Monkey Joes. Since our gym class was canceled we decided to do the next best thing or should I say the next best thing that would wear our little ones out. Daddy had the wonderful opportunity to take Jack last weekend when I was out of town. After hearing about all of their fun, I knew I had to take Jack and see for myself (with camera in hand). Daddy didn't exaggerate one bit about Jack's love for the "sligh" (translated as slide) or the life size blow up alligator. Jack was up and down and all around that arena of blow up jumpies. Toddler heaven, if I do say so myself. My little monkey would stop for a quick "mil, mil" break (which translates as whatever is in his sippy cup at the time) and then he was off again. I was close on his heels with my camera in his face. On occasion, I had to make a rescue if he got wedged between the 4 foot blow up poles or stuck under a dinosaur foot. The best part was when 8 month pregnant Cristina had to assist Sophia, luckily those rescues were few and far between or I might have been rescuing both of them...ha, that would have been a sight! By the end of our play we were all hot, tired and hungry. We headed to Willies for a restful lunch. It was Cristina and Sophia's first time eating at a Willies...how is that possible living in the ATL? Us Cibula's just might be eating out too much. Regardless, it was great food to follow our busy morning. Jack chowed down on a chicken and bean quesadilla...yum! and milk from Chick-fil-a. Yes, Willies does not serve milk so I had to make a milk run next door while Cristina watched the hungry babes. At the completion of meal time, Jack sported a bean beard and milk mustache. Can you say "oh so handsome"? Too bad I didn't bring my camera into the restaurant. We headed home and my little monkey crashed hard in his crib with visions of giant blow ups dancing in his head and a very full tummy.

Sweet Caroline

Oh, Sweet Caroline! We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Amy's first baby due in December. In preparation, Stephanie Brown, Erin Cox and I hosted a baby shower for Mommy and the little one this weekend in GB. The Speers graciously offered us girls their condo on the beach for our weekend stay. The weekend was a two for one...girl's weekend and a baby celebration. What more could you ask for? The shower was precious with a "Sweet Caroline" theme. But, then again, what baby girl shower isn't precious? As you can imagine everything was either pink or had pink on it. Us three hostess'/mommies of boys, couldn't quit oohing and ahhing over the girly stuff. In keeping with the sweet theme, there were whirly pops everywhere... on the invitation, on the clothesline, as table decor, etc, etc. Erin even found a lady on Etsy,(my new addiction),that made lollipop washcloths and used baby spoons as the stick...way too cute. They adorned the tables and actually serve a purpose post shower. Way to go Erin! The food was delish too. I guess we all owe props to Stephanie on that one. She slaved in the condo kitchen Friday night as the rest of us caught up over a glass of wine. Thanks Steph! But most importantly Amy and sweet Caroline were showered with all kinds of goodies. We can't wait to meet that darling baby girl. Be forwarned Amy, she may have three boys fighting over her! Here are a few photos of the shower. I really thought I took a pic of the invite, but I cant find it. Oh well, just imagine an adorable pink and green whirly pop complete with a cellophane wrapper and bow.

Prego Amy in front of Sweet Caroline's clothesline. Look at all of the cute whirly pop baby clothes,
who knew you could find so much with that theme?

The hostess' and Amy. Isn't that baby bump precious?
(L to R) Stephanie, Amy, Me, Erin

Amy's Mom painted this for the nursery. What a thoughtful gift and so cute! I'm going to have her paint
something for J's big boy room...one day!

This is Stephaine's little monkey, Evan. He was spending the weekend with YaYa and Big Daddy. Absolutely adorable, huh? How unfair that she got to see him over the weekend. Erin and I were missing our little ones desperately.
