Jack Is Four!

My first born turned 4 years old today. I've heard 4 is the golden age...some days are looking golden and others, not so much. But, we are here. We made it 4 years and I love that boy more now than I could have ever imagined.

Jack is full of life. He definitely has the ability to keep me on my toes and has so since the day he left the womb. Life with him is full of adventure, mis-steps, laughs, noise {lots of it}, love, wonderment, play, and so much more.

I know he is mine and I know it may seem that I am a bit biased {which I am}, but he is truly a smart little guy. He is constantly asking questions, thirsting for knowledge, and applying it every chance he can get. There is not a day that goes by that his Daddy and I aren't amazed by his thought process. {and here is my chance to brag--for nostalgia's sake, of course} Even his teacher has commented, "Jack is the brightest child in our class...academically". I didn't ask why she threw that "academically" in last minute, I just wanted to enjoy the moment.

I can easily categorize Jack as a Type A. Hmmm...wonder where he got that from? Everything has a place and a time in his little world. He is a creature of habit and though he is learning to adjust to the curve balls that life throws at him, it is still something we are forever working on {Mommy too}. Jack wants everything to be "perfect" and when I explain that nothing is "perfect", he solemnly says, "but I want it to be perfect". Unfortunately, that's what makes us such a good match--I can relate to that child on so many levels and actually have flashbacks to my childhood days. Helping him get through life's little 4 year old bumps, has ironically helped me too. I find myself trying to take my own advice. He and I were not only made from the same mold, but I think in many ways we were made for each other too.

Jack's playful side is a joy in itself. One minute he is high energy, flying Buzz Lightyear through the kitchen and over the counters while chanting "on infinity and beyond" and the next minute he is sitting quietly reading books or putting "hard" puzzles together. Jack takes pride in all that he accomplishes. He isn't too shy to tell you when he is "so proud" of himself and I'm always there to share the sentiment {at least I hope I am}.

Jack is most infamous in this house for hoarding or as he likes to call it "collecting". {now this, he did not get from me} Depending on the day, Jack has a crew of "fwrewns" with him. And he takes this crew EVERYWHERE. His crew can be a combo of lovey {which is slowly losing his ranking}, monkey, and a plastic dinosaur or it can be a combo of baby frog, cow, and Buzz, or a combo of Ernie, Elmo and Cookie, and I could go on and on, the combo lists are endless. The worst is when his pillow pet is in that combo--it's like toting a 3rd child everywhere we go. I never know what Jack is going to come to breakfast with in the a.m. and end the day with at bed time. It's another Jack adventure in our house.

Jack is still my amazing eater and therefore my amazing grower. The boy will try just about anything {I certainly can't guarantee that he will like it though}. His eating habits are very healthy for the most part. He does have a sweet tooth on occasion, but rarely finishes any sweet treat he indulges in. He snacks on yogurt, carrots, fruit {lots of fruit}, cheese, and drinks a ton of milk. He doesn't care much for french fries, hamburgers, and can do with or without chicken nuggets and pizza. I'm a running joke at McDonalds when I order a cheeseburger with no burger and no condiments, apples, and a milk {all per his request}. With that being said, I have been blessed with a great eater. I never realized how lucky I was until Mags came along, but that's a whole other story in itself.

In turn Jack has always been a great sleeper too. Lately, as we have been closing in on this 4 year old birthday, afternoon naps have been taking a down slide. I can happily say, they are not extinct yet, but we are in the process. I would say that Jack naps about 70% of the days. But, his naps are shortening...an hour and a half to two hours, sometimes two and a half. And on the days that he doesn't sleep I can hear him in his room "resting" and reading books. There is no way to tell when his days of afternoon napping will be gone for good, but I can assure you he will still have a rest time. Trust me, we both need it.

Jack is my helper and my boy of fantastic manners. I am rarely embarrassed in public, he somehow always put the charm on for strangers. His list of "thank yous", "pleases", and "may I's" is endless. Add his big blue eyes and he usually can get what he wants. Jack is almost always willing to help around the house. Sometimes I have to be careful not to use him as my "do boy" too much. But there he is, always willing and ready when I ask a favor. His star chart with chores has helped me to control my over use of him and it also makes him feel important around here, rightfully so.

And on that note, we couldn't have asked for a better big brother. He teaches Maggie all that he knows, loves her to the ends of the Earth, makes her giggle, and can agitate her all at the same time. Jack's favorite times are when the "whole family is together". He makes a big announcement and rattles off everyone's name, including Cosby. Speaking of Cosby, that boy of mine sure does need a dog of his own. He's declared himself Cosby's keeper and I don't know how keen Cosby is on that idea. Watching Jack order Cosby around is quite a sight.

So there you have it, my little 4 year old wonder. It's really hard to believe that 4 years ago to the day he was entering my life, and my, how my life would change. It has been such a blessing to watch him grow, nurture his way into this pre-school stage, and dream about all he will become in the next year {if it's up to him he will be a "dog feeder and Daddy" when he grows up}. Jack, as my first born, will always hold a special place in my heart...he broke me into motherhood...right out of the gate...and he has brought me more joy in the last 4 years than anything ever has. His heart is made of pure gold and everything about him makes this house a home. Life without him would not be the same. I thank God everyday for the one of the greatest blessings ever made.

Happy 4th Birthday little Monkey J! We can't wait to see what this next year in your life holds! If its anything like the past 4, it will be amazing...and busy too!

How Sweet It Is

I'm finding it hard to swallow that our 'babies' are turning 4 this Spring. Celebrating sweet Sophia's 4th was an endearing reminder to how far our first borns have come.

Jack and I met Sophia when they were each only 4 months old. Yes, 4 months and here we are at 4 years. Incredible. Since that first encounter, they've been attached at the hip. In the beginning it was due to Cristina's and my budding friendship. But, it didn't take long before sweet Sophia and busy Jack had developed an indescribable bond themselves.

The friendship that has grown among the four of us has been a true blessing. I needed it as much as Jack did back on that late summer day in 2007. Being a first time stay at home Mom was an adjustment...add a 'not so easy' baby to that and it was really an adjustment. Cristina has supported and guided me through the toughest times with Jack and not once has she gotten tired of hearing me vent {at least not to my knowledge}. And Sophia, well, I couldn't ask for a better influence on Jack. He adores and admires her and it is plain to see why.

So the celebration of Sophia's 4th year in this world was 'sweet' on so many levels. A little bittersweet {it feels like I have 2 kiddos turning the corner from toddler world to pre-school world}, and then there was that super sweet feeling in getting to share this day with our lifetime friend, and finally, literally sweet, and I mean literally...Sophia's theme was a "rainbow candy" party per her girly little self request.

How sweet it is to be 4...

Look at this sweet table. A kiddos dream {note I said kiddos, not Mommies}.

After filling their bags with sweet treats galore, these friends were giddy with their loot. I seriously don't think Jack has EVER had a bag of candy that big {oh, forgot about Halloween}. Regardless, we are going to be rationing the contents of this little yellow bag for a while.

If only Mommy would take the wrapper off. {Maggie has been waiting patiently for Sophia's birthday so she could wear this delicious outfit--the anticipation almost did her in...wink, wink}.

I banned Maggie from a cupcake {I know mean Mommy, but seriously, she didn't eat a bite of lunch and there was no way I was giving in to this sugar rush}. So what did Maggie do? She snuck off and found an abandoned cupcake. I'm actually not so mean...I let her have a little nibble while a snapped a picture of the thieving toddler and only then did I take it away.

As if they needed more candy...but what's a 'Rainbow Candy' party without a Pinata?

We left the party via Lollipop Lane {so so cute} with rainbow candy in our bellies, our brains, and our bags. Guess who couldn't settle down for a nap this afternoon?

Book Review: Bloodroot

Amazing! That is the only word I can find to describe my most recent read. Okay, and mystical, humbling, spellbinding, heart wrenching, brilliant, addicting, and....the list goes on.

I found myself literally drugged by the words and storyline of this book. Yes, it was that fabulous. I was up well past my bedtime too many nights absolutely entranced with this novel. Bloodroot had me in the first ten pages. That's all it took for me to realize I had found a jewel.

I would love to give you some great synopsis of the story I just engulfed. But, I almost find myself at a loss for words. Mainly I am just consumed with emotions--scattered emotions. That my friends, is a sure sign of a good read.

The author, Amy Greene, has an incredible talent for story telling. I would pay money for just a tiny tenth of her creative mind and eloquent words. She took the characters of a poverty stricken family over several generations and told a tale of how their lives intertwined in a rural mountain town and made their story so real and valuable.

There is a touch of faith and religion, family dynamics, grief, joy, indescribable fear, and true love told through the eyes of six amazing characters. Like I said...amazing, absolutely nothing short of amazing.

If you can't tell this may have made it to #1 on my fave book list. My next read has a lot to live up to.

If you never read anything I recommend, please at least give this one a try. It will not disappoint (even you non-readers out there--which I cannot believe even exist). Happy Reading!

Let The Birthday's Begin

Happy 1st birthday Matthew! It's so much fun being one!

The kids and I helped little Matthew celebrate his first birthday dinosaur style this weekend. Daddy was playing tennis, so I loaded up my little T-Rex's and headed out for some birthday fun. Jack explained to me on the way there that, "Matthew was having a baby dinosaur party and he (Jack) was having a big boy dinosaur party". Lest anyone was confused.

Baby or big boy it was another precious party. I have the most creative friends. Kudos to Erin for all of her handmade decor. I have to say I was most impressed with the adorable goodies--handmade dinosaur crayons and handmade coloring books. Jack has already colored and completed every activity in his book. And Maggie has taken to carrying her crayons around the house in a pail. Seriously don't know where she got that from, but she has been well entertained by it. It reminds me that I should go ahead and pull out the Easter baskets--imagine how much fun she could have with that!

So one down, four more to go. Yes, four more birthday parties this month {one of which is Jack's!}. That is one for every week of April. And the best part is they are all dear friends. So, fun for me and fun for Jack and Maggie!

The kids loved doodling and sticking at the dinosaur craft table. Anytime I was looking for Jack, this is where I could find him. {very ironic for a high energy boy} And although this may have been Jack's favorite part of the party, mine was for sure watching Matthew devour his smash cake. Did you see that face up there? So sweet!

Don't let that fru fru bow fool you. This girl has a teeny tomboy streak to her. She traipsed her dinosaurs up and down the table chanting "rrrrr". And if you think that is cute, you should see her with a toy car. {we owe all of this to big brother}

Did I mention Clay wasn't with me? I'm sure that is obvious based on these less than desirable pictures I have of my own children. I'm actually lucky that I even got these two. Although, the pictures are little proof--we really did have a roaring good time and the party truly was adorable via Martha Stewart. Did I say Martha Stewart? I meant Erin Cox ;)
